A Theoretical Consideration of the Action of X-rays on the Protozoan Colpidium Colpoda
1. The theory which Crowther has advanced to account for the variation of the lethal dose of roentgen rays among the individuals of a group of Colpidium colpoda is reviewed. 2. It is shown that the use of his small-body theory to explain the small value of lambda(e) leads to certain further assumptions about the nature of the destructive effect. 3. An alternative hypothesis is discussed.
متن کاملThe effect of roentgen rays upon the electrical excitability of the human eye.
It was reported by Brandes1) that a sensation of light was evoked by Roentgen rays. Since then this phenomenon has been investigated by Newell and Borley,2) Belluci,3) Lipetz4) and others. Lipetz4) showed that the Roentgen rays produced a lowering in responsivity of the retina to light and Roentgen rays, taking spike potentials from ganglion cells of the frog retina as an index. Recently Tarusa...
متن کاملThe Biological Measurement of Gamma Rays In
The determination of the ‘‘ equivalent roentgen ” value for gamma rays has received the attention of a number of investigators. Such studies have not been limited to physical measurements of gamma rays. A number of research workers have measured the quantity of gamma rays which will produce the same effect as one roentgen of x-rays on a biological test object. Several types of test material hav...
متن کاملWilhelm Conrad Röntgen and the Early History of the Roentgen Rays
The most fascinating and informative biography that has recently come to my attention is that of William Conrad Rontgen by Dr. Otto Glasser of Cleveland, which includes a chapter of "Personal Reminiscences" by Margret Boveri of Berlin. The preliminary part of the book deals with the dramatic chapter in science, the discovery of the roentgen rays, with a reprinting of Rontgen's first article "On...
متن کاملRoentgen treatment for Hodgkin's disease and lymphosarcoma of the chest.
Fifty.years ago, Roentgen announced to the world his discovery of peculiar rays which had the property of passing through substances of low atomic weight. Not knowing what these rays were, he called them "X-rays". This discovery caused a tremendous sensation, and within a few months the new rays were already being applied to the examination of fractures and dislocations of bones, to find foreig...
